the small hatchback class is one of the largest and most competitive in the UK containing pretty much every type of model.
You can think of from budget runabout upwards the 1-series sits unashamedly at the premium end of the segment appealing to buyers who want something a bit classier than an Astra or a focus and the people who are downsizing from executive cars.
If there’s one word more than any other that BMWs design is used to describe the one series its sporting and that shows through in the pronounced sculpting on the bumper this wide grille and the slim headlights incorporate LED daytime running lights along the side this rising Beltline and the swooping roofline combined to give it an almost coupe a light profile at the rear these l-shaped LED lights and even the lowdown position of these reflectors continue that sporty theme.
This may be the cheapest BMW that you can buy but with alloy wheels as well as chrome trim on the grille and on the exhaust pipe a standard on every model that looks certainly won’t leave you feeling shortchanged inside – this is classic BMW with these controls angled slightly towards the driver in this high center console giving an almost cockpit like feel there’s no shortage of space in the front either and this I drive control system is a lesson to other manufacturers for its ergonomics and ease of use plus you have access to the very latest in connectivity however it’s not all good news for a start the cabin looks a little dated next week’s competition.
You don’t have to drop your online too far to find some distinctly lower quality materials worse still when we say this is a small hatchback we mean it legroom is tight in the back and the combination of this narrow centre seat and its large transmission tunnel in the floor meets almost impossible to sit three adults across this rear bench which you can do in several the BMWs rivals similarly the boot is a little smaller than.
You’ll find in a Volkswagen Golf or an Audi a3 and there’s quite a lip to lift your luggage over many of these shortcomings can be forgiven once you’re behind the wheel beyond W is proud of the fact that the ones whose is the only rear-wheel drive car in its class and that means it drives.
With the poise and a balance that very few of its rivals can last for teenager is obvious evening the cheapest model in the range if you can stretch to the m135i at the top of the range you’re getting around the very best and sharpest hot hatches in the UK whatever you want though the wide range of strong and flexible engines.
Which is easy to find a model that gives your perfect balance of performance and economy but for us the star of the show is the one 160 evey which averages more than 80 miles to the gallon there was no sacrifice in everyday drivability or performance sadly.
There is a price to pay and that’s a lack of ride comfort the 1-series just makes too much of a meal of lumps and bumps too much as a time and some drivers simply won’t be happy to put up with that the combination of smart looks good standard equipment and frugal engines means the one series.
Is well worth and look especially if you like a sporty Drive it’s strong residual values will make it quite cheap to own.
But the firm ride patchy interior quality and limited practicality mean it’s not quite our favorite small hatch.
